How Long Do Breast Implants Last? (Updated 2026)

Parker Center for Plastic Surgery

Breast implants can last 10 to 15 years or longer, but they are not designed to last a lifetime. Some implants remain intact for well over a decade, while others need to be replaced before then due to changes in the body or complications such as rupture.

Because there’s no set expiration date, it’s impossible to give a definitive answer about how long your implants will last. That’s why it’s important to monitor your implants over time and check in with your plastic surgeon periodically. Below, we explain what affects how long breast implants last—and when you might consider replacing them.

How Often Should You Replace Your Breast Implants?

You do not need to replace your breast implants on a set schedule. If your implants are healthy, and you continue to be happy with them, there’s no need to replace them.

Still, you should monitor your breast implants regularly to ensure they’re intact and problem-free. If you have silicone implants, the FDA recommends MRI or high-resolution ultrasound screening beginning 5 to 6 years after placement and continuing every 2 to 3 years.

Do Implants Need To Be Replaced Every 10 Years?

One of the most persistent myths regarding breast implants is that they need to be replaced every decade—as if these medical devices were programmed to give out at a specific milestone. This misunderstanding likely stems from a combination of the limited warranties placed on implants many years ago, studies reporting an increased risk of complications as implants age, and the fact that “10 years” is a nice, though arbitrary, number.

Truthfully, only about 10% of implants experience rupture, and 90% of implants are safe for much longer than a decade—and implant manufacturers now offer lifetime warranties on breast implants that cover ruptures.

That being said, if you are unhappy with your current implant size, shape, or position, talk to your plastic surgeon about breast implant revision surgery. You can discuss what you no longer like about your breast implants and see if you want to take advantage of new options.

Do Silicone or Saline Implants Last Longer?

Both silicone and saline implants are designed to last about the same amount of time, and neither has proven to last longer than the other. Your implant’s longevity depends more on your body, lifestyle, and the risk of complications than the type of implant you choose.

ConsiderationSilicone ImplantsSaline Implants
LongevityDesigned to last many years; no proven lifespan advantage over salineDesigned to last many years; no proven lifespan advantage over silicone
Feel & AppearanceSofter, more natural feelSlightly firmer; may feel less natural in some patients
Rupture DetectionMay be “silent” and require MRI or ultrasound to detectQuickly noticeable rupture, as the implant deflates
Monitoring NeedsNo routine imaging is typically required for rupture detectionNo routine imaging typically required for rupture detection
Incision SizeSlightly larger incision neededSmaller incision possible (filled after placement)
CustomizationAvailable in a wide range of cohesive gel optionsAdjustable fill volume allows for minor size customization during surgery

Because both types have similar longevity, the best choice usually comes down to your aesthetic goals, anatomy, and comfort with long-term monitoring.

Reasons You May Consider New Breast Implants

While it is true that breast implants can last decades, there are reasons you may simply want to swap out your breast implants. The most common reason? Normal life changes. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuation, aging, and menopause can all impact your body, including your breasts. Many women find that, over the years, these life events can lead to breast sagging or loss of fullness in the upper breast.

Additionally, you may have changed. Many women’s lifestyles or aesthetic preferences shift over time, leading to a desire to increase or decrease their implant size or swap their implants out for an alternative shape. Speaking with a surgeon can help you learn more about what your options are now or find out about other breast enhancement procedures, like breast lift surgery, to compensate for shape changes that have occurred over the years.

Newest Breast Implants

Compared to even a decade ago, breast implant technology has made great strides. Silicone breast implants are in their 5th generation of development, and there are more options than ever for safely achieving natural-looking results. Women can choose the right shape, size, profile, texture, material, and firmness to fit their unique needs. Our practice often prefers using Motiva® and Mentor® breast implants for their natural feel, varied options, and safety record.

Additionally, breast augmentation techniques are constantly being advanced. Reduced scar visibility, updated implant placement options, and rapid recovery protocols are among the many ways that plastic surgeons have advanced the procedure.
